With the record-setting snowfall this past winter, one Black River Falls resident wanted to put the city on the map. Jack Taylor, who is self-employed running a video company, decided to take on the task of building Wisconsin’s largest snowman.
A graduate of Black River Falls High school in 2009, Taylor said that ideas for projects like this come to him in his spare time.
Taylor said, “One of my big projects that I thought we could do was build a giant snow man to make Black River Falls the home of Wisconsin’s tallest snowman ever. My idea came last year, but we didn’t get enough snow. And this year, we got a record amount of snow…that was my sign from Heaven to say, ‘It’s time to do this thing.’”
With the help of family, friends, and various farm equipment, Jack built the snowman just South of Black River Falls at the house he grew up in.
Taylor said, “Yeah it was not the traditional way of rolling up a snowball and setting it up on top of one another. We actually used quite a bit of heavy equipment.”
Jack couldn't give an exact number of people that have come through to see the giant snowman, but he did say that it has helped lighten the mood of the winter that we just got through.
“Seeing the reaction from hundreds maybe thousands of people that have come through has made it all worth it, because, it’s just brought so much joy to people. And I know its cliché, but it’s truly made a lot of people happy…students, but also older people that have come throughout the day, they’ve just been all smiles. And to see the enjoyment that has come from people’s faces, especially after a brutal winter that we just had, I think that’s the silver lining to the winter of 2019," said Taylor.
The giant snowman can be seen at N3260 East Pine Hill Road, Black River Falls, WI. You may want to get out to see it soon, before the spring weather takes it away.
