Republican Leaders Oppose Evers' Statewide Mask Mandate

Republican legislative leaders are criticizing Governor Tony Evers' statewide mask order.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said there's no need for "a one-size-fits-all mandate." Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he's gauging the interest in his caucus, to possibly vote down the order, and that the Legislature, which hasn't met for weeks, should be reconvening for that. Fitzgerald added,"good luck enforcing this without local support." Milwaukee County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson praised Governor Evers for his emergency order and called upon the local health officers to commit to enforcing the mandate. The White House Coronavirus Task Force added Wisconsin to its list of "red zone" states this week. 1,059 out of 17,270 people tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday.
