Western Wisconsin will have its say next month on plans to build a new electric transmission line north of La Crosse.
X-cel Energy, W-P-P-I, and the Dairyland Power Co-op have asked state officials to approve a 345-kilovolt line from Alma to Holmen. It's part of Cap-X-2020, a series of power lines from the Dakotas to Madison. Utility officials say the western Wisconsin line is needed to meet a growing demand for electricity in the La Crosse area. But a recent study by the state Public Service Commission questioned whether the region would grow enough to justify the project. The P-S-C will hold hearings on the proposed line March 13th in Alma, and March 14th in Centerville.
