Vice President Joe Biden told a Sunday audience in Green Bay that his Democratic party is fighting for the middle class. Biden made an appearance at the National Railroad Museum in Brown County. He also said Republicans are being deceptive when they try to blame the economic downturn on President Obama. He said Mitt Romney and his Wisconsin running mate Paul Ryan talk about restoring the country, but they are planning to use economic strategies which have failed in the past. The campaign stop in northeastern Wisconsin was part of the Obama-Biden campaign's "Road to Charlotte" tour, leading up to the Democratic National Convention starting Tuesday.

Sheboygan police say a man who drowned in Lake Michigan Sunday afternoon was trying to save his nine year old grandson. The victim was 61 years old. When officers arrived at North Beach, they found people on the scene already performing CPR on the man who had been pulled out of the water. Witnesses say the boy had swum too far from the shore and the grandfather went out to help. Other people who were on the beach managed to get the boy to safety, then they noticed his grandfather hadn't emerged from the water. The man from Freedom was found unresponsive in the water and he was pulled to shore. Paramedics try to revive him and he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Mount Pleasant police say an officer was shooting in self-defense when he killed a pit bull yesterday morning. A man had called for help, saying he was trapped on top of a vehicle by a dog which was trying to attack him. When the officer arrived on the scene, he says he saw the dog about 15 feet from the man who had called. The officer drove his squad car between the dog and the man, allowing the man to get away. When the officer got out of his car, the dog took off after him, chasing him across the street. That's when the officer shot the pit bull to death.

One 10 year old boy is dead and a second 10 year old in critical condition after the ATV they were riding collided with a truck. It happened Sunday morning in the northeastern Town of Middle Inlet. Crash scene investigators report the young ATV driver failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the accident. The driver was dead at the scene after suffering head and internal injuries. The driver of the pickup truck and a passenger were not hurt in the crash which happened at about 10 a.m.

A woman from Beloit faces multiple charges after she was found to be driving drunk with a one year old child in her vehicle. The woman crashed into a light pole early Saturday morning. Officers who responded to the crash scene say the 32 year old woman failed field sobriety tests and admitted to them she had been drinking before the accident. The baby was examined at a hospital and was found to have no injuries. Officers say an open bottle of vodka was found in the vehicle after the crash. Among the charges the woman faces is third-offense drunken driving.

The Second National-International Urban and Small Farm Conference is expected to draw about three thousand people to West Allis this coming weekend. Starting Friday and running through Sunday, the event will be held at Wisconsin State Fair Park. Farming experts from all over the country will host more than a dozen workshops and conferences. The first conference like this one was held two years ago. Both have been sponsored by the nonprofit group Growing Power which promotes sustainable farming methods.

It's going to be a busy three-week period for bird watchers in Wisconsin. The Department of Natural Resources says bird migration should peak during the period. Bird watchers should see a lot of activity from hummingbirds, warblers, vireos and thrushes. Nighthawks and chimney swifts should be active at night. The summer drought will make this migration more stressful for the birds than normal. Their food sources have been affected. The DNR says homeowners can help by providing the birds with a water sources and vegetation for shelter.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee says the search for a missing 14 year old boy will continue as long as there is a possibility of survival. The boy's name and hometown have not been released. Port Washington police say they got a call from help yesterday afternoon just after 2:30. Several agencies launched rescue boats and a helicopter in the search near the water filtration plant. Friends say the missing boat was swimming with them when he went under and didn't come back up. Authorities say he might have been caught in a current, though there were no rip current or other weather-related warnings at the time.

The Dodge County Sheriff's office says it thinks the six to eight suspects being sought in a home invasion are from outside the county. The invaders broke into a home Saturday and tied up 13 occupants in the town of Theresa. The victims ranged in age from four years old to some in their 30s. They say they were forced into a small room and some were kicked or hit with guns. The invaders took about 10 thousand dollars in jewelry and money. One of the victims managed to get free and run to a neighboring farm to call 9-1-1. All injuries were said to be minor.
