Black River Falls Fire Department
The Black River Falls Fire Department (BRFFD) has been notified by the office of Congressman Ron Kind and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness (ODP) that the Department will receive funding through the 2012 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) written by the Department.
BRFFD requested under the Operations and Firefighter (FF) Safety "Equipment" section of the AFG for funds to purchase a new self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) compressor and cascade bottles for air storage.
The purpose of our request was the need to protect the health and safety of the firefighters with safe breathing air with a new reliable compressor that will monitor the air for carbon monoxide (CO). Our current compressor does not have CO monitoring and it is possible that CO contamination could happen as the compressor is located in the apparatus bay area of the station. The Department’s current compressor which is 16 years old is leaking oil from the cylinder heads. The service technician stated the compressor may fail the next time it is used or could last for an unknown amount of time.
The 6000PSI compressor and storage tanks will allow the Department to get full use of its 60 minute SCBA bottles which will also allow the FF’s more time to get tasks completed that they had been assigned.
The 95/5 Federal grant will award the Department $48,430.00. The Federal share will be $46,009 and the local 5% share will be $2,421.
