Residents in the Westby Area School District say no to a three-tier referendum package that would have allowed the district to exceed the state mandated revenue cap for the next three years.

The vote failed by over 100 of the nearly 1000 votes cast.

The Board of Education voted earlier this year to hold a referendum asking voters to allow the district to exceed the revenue limit by $300,000 (2013-14), $400,000 (2014-15) and $500,000 (2015-16), respectively.

The referendum would have provided funds for educational programming, transportation equipment, maintenance projects and improving school security.

Westby schools have made budget reductions over the past nine years totaling more than $2.4 million. The reductions included 19 staff positions, closing Chaseburg School, and drops in building, department and co-curricular budgets.
