Woman Pleads Insanity in Death of Young Girl

A western Wisconsin woman now claims she was insane when she allegedly drugged her boyfriend's young daughter to death. 

22-year-old Amanda Butts of Fairchild has pleaded innocent-by-insanity to Trempealeau County charges of reckless homicide, illegally serving narcotics to a minor, and two counts of felony child abuse.  A judge ordered a mental exam.  A trial date is expected to be set at a conference on September 30th, and the status of the case will be reviewed on October 17th.  Prosecutors said Butts was babysitting 22-month-old Alexis Behlke in June, when she allegedly bruised the toddler and fed her a combination of medicines which included Oxycodone.  Officials quoted Butts as saying Alexis was whining and would not sleep -- so she gave the child the drugs to settle her down.  Her boyfriend was at work at the time.
