Authorities: La Crosse Woman Shot Herself

(8-31-10)  La Crosse authorities say a drive-by shooting Sunday night prompted a woman to take her own life a short time later. Police say they found 19-year-old Youa Moua outside her house near the La Crosse bluffs. That was about 35-minutes after a drive-by shooting took place a few miles away. A witness says about a half-dozen bullets were shot at the house, but no one was hurt. A police official said the shootings were domestic-related, but he refused to provide the circumstances. Moua died at a hospital. The La Crosse County medical examiner said she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Both incidents are still under investigation, and the State Crime Lab is looking at the evidence.

La Crosse Fire May Have Been Set on Purpose

(8/30/10-WRN) Authorities in La Crosse say a fire that caused extensive damage to a baseball field might have been set on purpose. It happened early yesterday at Copeland Park, a city-owned facility used by the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. The third base dugout was heavily damaged, along with a large part of the grandstand along the third base line. A fire-fighter injured a shoulder and was taken treated at a La Crosse hospital and later released. Investigators believe the fire was started in a corner of the dugout where paper, plastic, and a towel were started on fire. Police said they found footprints that went from the dug-out to the pitchers’ mound – and the same footprints indicated that the person had run around the bases. A fire-fighter reported seeing a man walk near the stadium’s beer garden as units arrived. The Loggers are a summer team made up of college baseball players. Their general manager, Chris Goodell, said the team is devastated – and the community and youth baseball teams that also used Copeland Park suffered as well.

Dan Kapanke Has Admitted Taking Twice as Much

(8/17/10-WRN) Republican U-S House candidate Dan Kapanke has admitted taking twice as much as originally reported from his charitable foundation, to help pay back a loan connected with his baseball team. Kapanke, a state senator from La Crosse, told the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram that he had the La Crosse Loggers Foundation pay back 32-thousand-dollars on a loan for stadium lights where the Loggers play in the Northwoods League. It was originally reported that the foundation has used almost 17-thousand in donations for the lights – donations that partially came from groups that have lobbyists at the State Capitol. It’s against the law for legislators to take anything of value from lobbyists. And state Democrats filed a complaint this week asking the Government Accountability Board to seek charges against Kapanke, one of two G-O-P candidates for the House seat now held by Democrat Ron Kind of La Crosse. Kapanke said the payments were a mistake, but he said the stadium is used by many other people beside his baseball team. The Accountability Board has not said what it would do about the case. State Democratic spokesman Graeme Zielinski said Kapanke was trying to both justify his actions and admit they were wrong. Zielinski calls it a “crime” and not an innocent mistake.
