(1/7/12) Several years ago the Black River Area Chamber of Commerce initiated a program to introduce high school students to the Chamber of Commerce world.
Not only did the Chamber propose to educate students on what a Chamber of Commerce does, but also to give students their first taste of how a Board of Directors functions. The program is now in its fourth year and two juniors, Maria Lee and Nathan Helstad have been selected to serve as Junior Ambassadors for 2012.
Maria is the Vice-President of the junior class and is also involved in basketball, volleyball, softball, FCCLA and Spanish Club. Her future plans include attending a four-year college in the health science field. Maria’s parents are Rich and Judy Lee of Black River Falls. Nathan is a member of the student senate and is also active in FCCLA, football, basketball, and golf. Nathan’s future plans include attending a four-year college, considering a degree in teaching at the high school level. Nathan is the son of Paul & Connie Helstad.
Beginning in January, the students will follow a curriculum designed to teach them how the Black River Area Chamber is active on the local, regional and state level. They will attend the Chamber board of directors meetings and learn about the diverse nature of our county’s business economy. Prior to each meeting, Chamber board members and Executive Director Barb Brower will meet one-on-one with the students providing instruction on various aspects of the Chamber of Commerce.
