(1/12/12) Once again the citizens of Jackson County have generously supported Project Christmas. We are so very thankful to be living in such a caring community.
On Saturday, December 17, 2011, Project Christmas “elves” (drivers and helpers) were able to visit 482 Jackson County households. Many factors such as unemployment, illness, and a declining economy all made Project Christmas assistance necessary. Fortunately, we were able to anticipate this significant increase in numbers. We also appreciated being able to use the National Guard Armory as our headquarters.
Volunteers and donors of all ages once again came to the rescue. We were particularly impressed with the amount of support given by young persons. Students, church confirmation groups, 4-H clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other youth groups were eager and generous volunteers with their time and talents.
Despite the increased need for Project Christmas assistance, we again ended with a positive financial balance. The financial donations made to Project Christmas – 2011 were outstanding. Many, many concerned individuals, organizations, church groups, and businesses rose to the occasion with generous checks and cash donations.
The collections made at the various schools throughout the county were great. The school nights at Pizza Hut were very successful as was the Project Christmas night at Culver’s. The cash collection boxes and the red, collection barrels that were placed in various businesses throughout the county were filled generously.
The knitted and sewn items made by various church groups were great as were the quilts and gift bags made by the inmates of Jackson Correctional Institution. The gift suggestion area at the local Wal-Mart Super Store was also very successful.
Those individuals who shopped, sorted, wrapped, packed, and delivered deserve many thanks. Over the years, many friendships have formed during these work sessions.
It would be impossible for me to list and thank each Project Christmas donor. We do, however, want to issue a heartfelt thank you to each and everyone who contributed to Project Christmas – 2011. Your efforts and generosity definitely made a difference for many households!
