Fire at UW-L Dorm

About 275 residents of a U-W La Crosse dormitory found someplace else to sleep last night, after a fire started in a basement rec room.

Residents of Drake Hall were awakened and evacuated about 4:25 yesterday morning. Nobody was injured. Police later escorted residents to their rooms so they could get enough belongings to stay someplace else overnight -- either with friends, or in another campus building that was opened. U-W La Crosse Police say the fire destroyed several pieces of furniture, and investigators are trying to determine if that's where the blaze started. Residents cannot return until the building's heating-and-electrical systems are deemed safe. The entire basement had smoke and water damage. Because it's a state-owned building, the state Fire Marshal's office is handling the investigation.
