Scammers Active at Tax Season

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says it's getting reports of people losing money to scammers.

Published reports say now that tax refunds are coming out, they're getting reports of people sending money, not knowing they were getting scammed.

Officers say if you get an unexpected check in the mail, don't get involved. If you are asked to open an account and promised a cut of some money, they warn it is most likely a scam. Officers also instruct you to never send money to people you don't know.

They remind you to not give out your information and be cautious of deals you get in the mail
