Volunteen Opportunities

(4/26/12) Volunteen Opportunities this SummerApplications are now available for the 2012 Summer Volunteen Program sponsored by the Partners of Black River Memorial Hospital.

Students must be 14 to 18 years of age, or entering the ninth grade to apply. Applications are available at the online at under the tab “About Us – Volunteers” and the Volunteen Program tab. The registration deadline is June 4, 2012.

Students must commit to volunteering a minimum of four hours a week at the hospital, Pine View Care Center, or Family Heritage Care Center. They must also attend a training/orientation session scheduled for Monday, June 20, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the hospital.

At the hospital, Volunteens assist in escorting patients and visitors, deliver patient mail, visit patients, serve coffee to patients and visitors, staff the information desk, and assist departments with various duties. At the nursing homes, Volunteens visit with the residents and assist with activities such as picnics and special outings.

One component of the Volunteen Program is "shadowing," in which Volunteens have the opportunity to spend time with someone in a particular profession they wish to explore. Some of the areas "shadowed" have been nursing, laboratory, ER, OB, surgery, physical therapy, dietary and radiology.

The objectives of the Volunteen Program are to broaden students' abilities to interact with other people; learn to handle responsibilities; learn the satisfaction of helping others; gain a sense of self-worth and self-esteem; build confidence; get an inside look at health careers; learn work ethics; and learn work skills.

Funding for the program comes, in part, from a Lunda Charitable Trust grant.
