NWS to Use Cellphones For Warnings

5-17-12

Starting next month, the National Weather Service will be working with cell phone service providers to make sure weather warnings get to people quickly.

Those who sign up will receive text messages when bad weather approaches. The Wireless Emergency Alert Service will not only provide information in the case of a dangerous weather event, it will also have a distinct sound to distinguish the important information from regular text messages. Anyone carrying a cell phone would be automatically signed up.
