Veterans Memorial Completes First Phase of Project

(5/30/12) The Tomah Area Veterans Memorial Campaign recently announced that they have completed Phase 1 of the Memorial construction project.

“The first phase of the Veterans Memorial project has been completed,” Site Planning Director Tom Flock said.  “We set a lot more bricks and tiles and mortared the granite cap on top of the Memorial walls.  If you look at it now, you would think that we were done.  The walls look complete.  However, we aren’t done yet.”

Architect and Memorial site planner Brad Kortbein designed Phase 2, which the committee has approved.  The plan includes the design and construction of two “pier” structures that will stand within the Memorial walls and house additional bricks and tiles. Both piers will be built directly behind and to the side of the monument centerpiece.

“We still have quite a few bricks and tiles that need to go up yet and these piers are where they will go,” Co-Chair Pete Peterson said.  “This will also allow us to continue selling the more bricks and tiles now and in the future.”

The Memorial recently added names of local men killed-in-action during the Civil War and Spanish-American War onto the Killed-In-Action pillar at the site.

In order to help contribute to the project, or to buy a tile, call Chris Hanson at the Chamber of Commerce office at 608-372-2166 or for more information on the Veterans Memorial Project visit: www.tomahveteransmemorial.com
