Tigers Fall, Coach Steps Down

It was the end of a season and end of an era in Black River Falls Thursday

The Tigers softball team battled back from a 9-2 defecit to tie their game at Altoona at 9-9.  The Rails scored 3 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th to earn a 13-9 Regional final win and a trip to sectionals on Monday.  The Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Altoona scored 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning and five more in the second.  The tigers tied it with 3 in the 3rd and 4 in the 4th.

After the game, head coach Mary Rykken confirmed that she will be stepping down as the coach of the Tiger softball team.  Its a position she's held since 1991.  Rykken coached the Tigers to over 280 wins in over 400 games in her 21 years.  The Tigers earned a trip to the sectional finals in 2004, only to lose to the eventual state champion Rice Lake.  No replacement has been named yet.
