(6/1/12) A La Crosse man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for breaking the skull, arms, legs, and ribs of his three-month-old daughter.
31-year-old Gavin Attoe must also spend five years under extended supervision once he leaves prison, plus five additional years of probation. Deputy District Attorney Crystal Jensen said it was not a matter of a parent losing control a couple times – but rather, it was what Jensen called “repeated systematic torture of a child completely incapable of protecting herself.” The abuse was committed between October of 2010 and February of last year. And Jensen says it’s still too early to tell if the child will have permanent damage from the attacks. Attoe’s attorney said her client was recovering from surgery at the time of the abuse – and he was getting chemo-therapy, struggling with his finances, and facing new challenges of parenthood. Attoe suffered from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and the disease is in remission. He pleaded no contest to two charges of physical child abuse. Three similar counts were dropped in a plea bargain.
