Homicide charges are expected to be filed today against a 34-year-old man suspected of killing his three young daughters in River Falls, right after his ex-wife agreed to let him visit them.
Aaron Schaffhausen is due in Saint Croix County Circuit Court at one o’clock in the deaths of five-year-old Cecilia, eight-year-old Sophie, and 11-year-old Amara Schaffhausen. Last night, over 200 people attended a memorial vigil at Glen Park in River Falls. Girls on Amara’s traveling soccer team cried, hugged, and handed out messages of support. They decided not to take part in their playoffs this weekend after the loss of their teammate. Meanwhile, another private vigil took place at the Unitarian Universalist Society in River Falls. The girls and their mother Jessica were members there. Authorities have not said how the youngsters died. Police said they found the girls’ bodies in their mother’s home Tuesday afternoon. It smelled of gas at the time. Police said the fireplace was turned on, and there appeared to be a flammable liquid in the basement. Aaron and Jessica Schaffhausen divorced in January, and Aaron moved to Minot North Dakota. Officials said he called his ex-wife out-of-the-blue on Tuesday and asked to see the girls. A baby-sitter left before he showed up. Later, police said he called his ex-wife to say he harmed the children. Officials said there were two previous incidents at the home – and in March, Schaffhausen allegedly threatened to hurt at least one of the girls.
