Weekend Crash Kills Trempealeau County Man

A 29-year-old Trempealeau County man is dead after crashing his car in northern Jackson County sometime Saturday night .

A bicyclist found the single-vehicle crash shortly before 7 Sunday morning on County Hwy. B in the town of Garfield, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, Matthew Schermerhorn of Osseo, Wis., was pronounced dead at the scene.

It appeared Schermerhorn, who was not wearing a seat belt, missed a turn and hit several large trees. According to the sheriff’s department, alcohol and speed may have contributed to the crash.

The crash was Jackson County’s third highway fatality since August.
