Burnstad's Market Announces Food Rescue Program

(11/9/12) Burnstad's Market in cooperation with Second Harvest Heartland is pleased to initiate a food rescue program to benefit Friends Sharing Food.

This program will initially recover fresh produce to distribute to Friends Sharing Food.

Second Harvest Heartland works with partners like Friends Sharing Food throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin to collect more than 18 million pounds of nutritious food each year.  Friends Sharing Food, Inc, (FSF) operates four programs in Jackson County; Food for Kids, Friends' Food Shelf, Jackson County Food Pantry and Neighborhood Food Pantry.  FSF operates to help alleviate food insecurities for families in our county.  These four programs were able to provide 23,963 pounds of food for Jackson County residents during the month of October.  Retailers like Burnstad's are able to provide meals to their local community while reducing their disposal cost and helping the environment.

"A market like ours always has products that are perfectly edible yet unsalable to our guests for various reasons. While we could dispose these foods, a better solution would be to have the foods "rescued" and then distributed to those in need" – Alex Zamarripa, Burnstad's Store Director. Joy Fossum, Friends Sharing Food board member also stated, "It's great to have Burnstad's on board. We look forward to working with them. Burnstad's participation will definitely help the "Shelf" provide more produce choices for our clients."
