Area Hunter Fatally Injured in ATV Accident

11-27-12

The Jackson County Sherriff has released information on an ATV fatality this weekend that claimed the life of an area man.

According to a news release, deputies located the accident scene and the victim who was later identified as, 54 year old MARVIN (D) WALDSMITH, of rural Black River Falls, Wisconsin.

According to the sherriff's department's release, the initial investigation revealed that Mr. WALDSMITH was deer hunting on property owned by a friend. At the time of the accident, Mr. WALDSMITH was operating an ATV along with his young son as the pair attempted to climb a steep hill on a ridge towards a deer stand Friday morning.

Reports indicate the ATV while traversing the steep grade drove over a log in the wooded path and started to tip backwards. Mr. WALDSMITH’s son was able to jump away from the ATV as it was overturning, subsequently pinning the victim beneath the machine. Mr. WALDSMITH was able to call out to his son to go for help, which the boy did.

Upon returning to the crash site, friends and family called for emergency services. It appeared at this point however, that the weight of the overturned ATV was too much for the victim to continue breathing. After being removed from the woods by rescue personnel, Mr. WALDSMITH was pronounced deceased by the Jackson County Coroner.

This matter remains under investigation by authorities.
