(12/25/12) A Christmas Eve fire causes heavy smoke damage to the Jackson County Highway Department Shop.
According to Black River Falls Fire Chief Steve Schreiber, his department was called out just after 11-o'clock Monday night for smoke coming from the shop on Harrison Street. Schreiber says upon arrival, heavy black smoke and flames appeared to be a county dump-truck/snow plow on fire. Firefighters broke out a window to attack the fire. Once inside, it was confirmed a county dump truck was the source of the fire, which had extended into the roof of County Shop. Damage estimates are unknown at this time, but the truck chassis appears to be a total loss. The investigation into what caused the fire continues, but Chief Schreiber says it appears to have started in the truck's cab or engine compartment area. Four units and ten firefighters were on scene for four-and-a-half hours assisted by the Black River Falls Police Department, City Utilities, and We Energies. No injuries were reported.
