(3/30/13-Tony Hart) While it is the sixth smallest percentage drop since 1992, 3.8 percent of US dairy farms hung up their milkers in 2012.
The reduction brought dairy farm numbers to just over 49-thousand. The Southeast US was hardest hit, losing 5.6 percent of its dairies. Washington was the only state that bucked national trends by adding 10 dairy farms last year. Of the over 82-thousand dairies exiting the dairy business during the past two decades, 70 percent sold their cows between 1992 and 2002.
