(4/11/13) The Department of Veterans Affairs in Tomah will open its Veterans' Golf Course on Friday, April 12. The nine-hole golf course is open to the public and is located on the campus of the Tomah VA.

The Veterans' Golf Course is a non-profit course whose primary purpose is to provide a golf facility for Veterans receiving care at the Tomah VA. Funds generated from public play and donations provide the means to operate and maintain the course. For over 10 years, the golf course has not relied on funding from the Tomah VA's budget. In order to keep the golf course available for hospitalized Veterans to use, the facility relies on public support.

The Veterans' Golf Course pro shop is operated by VA volunteers. The Veterans' Golf Course is a family-friendly course, featuring nine-holes and a par-36 layout. There is a pro shop, a pavilion with picnic tables, snacks and drinks for sale, and restrooms.

The course will be open from sun-up to sun-down, weather permitting. For the next month or so, spring rules apply. When the flags are on the greens, the course is open for play.

Golfers who arrive when the pro shop is not open are asked to abide by the "honor system" and deposit their green fee in the "honor box" located at the starter building. Volunteer schedules may be sporadic during the first month of the season, so players are asked to be prepared to use the honor box.

There are motorized carts, club and pull-cart rentals, when the pro shop is manned by volunteers.

A season pass is available for $200. The pass is good for unlimited golf throughout the 2013 golf season. A punch card is also available. Golfers who purchase these cards golf eleven rounds for the price of ten. Punch cards from previous seasons will be honored.

Hole sponsorships are available for the 2013 golf season. For $250, a business, organization or individual can sponsor a hole and be recognized for doing so.

Individuals interested in volunteering at the Veterans Golf Course are encouraged to call Tomah VA Voluntary Service at 608-372-1727. Volunteers are always needed.

Tee times are not necessary, but if one is desired, please call 608-372-1243. For more information about the golf course, how to sign up to be a golf course volunteer, hole sponsorships, or to purchase a season pass, please call Tomah VA Voluntary Services at 608-372-1727.
