Sparta Girl Wins Google Scholarship

5-23-13

On Google’s home page today, you’ll see a drawing by a western Wisconsin high school senior. Sabrina Brady of Sparta won the national “Doodle-for-Google” contest.

About 130-thousand youngsters entered. This year’s theme was “My Best Day Ever.” Brady’s entry was called “Coming Home.” She drew herself running toward her father, right after he got home from an 18-month deployment in Iraq. Brady portrays herself in black-and-white while running toward her father. Then when they hug, the portrait changes to full color. The second “O” in the Google logo depicts yellow sunshine, and the soldier stands straight where the “L” would normally be. Ryan Germick of Google said an online vote determined the winner – and people were heartened by Brady’s creative use of the Google letters to illustrate a heart-felt moment. Brady is an art student who plans to attend the Minneapolis College of Art-and-Design this fall. She won a 30-thousand dollar college scholarship, a Chrome-book computer, and a 50-thousand-dollar technology grant for Sparta High School. In addition, 50 state finalists will have their doodles featured in an exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York through mid-July.
