(5/28/13) A state trial began this morning for a Marshfield man accused of plotting to kill a Planned Parenthood abortion doctor in Madison just over two years ago.

A jury was being picked in Dane County Circuit Court to consider an attempted homicide charge against 65-year-old Ralph Lang. He also faces federal charges. That's after he reportedly told a police officer he accidently shot his gun through a Madison motel room door – and he was planning to shoot a doctor the next day at the nearby Planned Parenthood abortion clinic because quote, "They are killing babies." The incident happened in May of 2011. His state trial is scheduled to run through Thursday. Lang is also awaiting a possible federal court trial on charges of trying to injure people who are taking part in a federally-funded program. Lang's attorneys say that Planned Parenthood's federal money cannot legally be used to pay for abortions – and therefore, those charges should be dropped. A court decision on that request was still pending at last word.
