One of two men who escaped from the Black River Correctional Center last summer pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

30 year old James R. Newman was serving a three-year sentence for multiple convictions of discharging a firearm into a building when he and 19 year old James Misleveck walked away from the minimum security camp in July and went on a crime spree that ended in Florida.

They stole a 12-gauge shotgun from an unlocked pickup truck in Black River Falls then kidnapped a woman from the parking lot of the Ho-Chunk casino, also in Black River Falls.

The pair stole another truck parked at a Sparta business where they released the woman.

The men eluded law enforcement who warned area residents to stay indoors. They avoided authorities until observed at a Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in southern Florida
