(7/12/13) Jackson In Action (JIA), a Jackson County area coalition comprised of community agencies & health care organizations, has partnered with the Karner Blue 5K-10K-Half Marathon planning committee to develop an expanded Kids Race for youth eight and under.
On July 20, 2013, the Kids Race begins shortly after 8:00 a.m. at the Field of Honor Park behind the Chamber of Commerce Building. The JIA committee is planning activities where participants can spin nutrition & physical activity wheels for prizes. The first fifty participants in the Kids Race will receive an ergonomic back-pack stuffed with items to promote healthy lifestyles including a jump rope, a portioned plate called "My Plate" to illustrate the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet and a coloring book among other things. Nicole Schweitzer, spokesperson for JIA commented, "JIA is pleased to help promote healthy eating combined with physical activity to improve the health of children and their families in our county. We (JIA) have sponsored and coordinated many community programs promoting healthy lifestyles and joining with the race team makes perfect sense. " More information regarding the community coalition can be found at www.jacksoninaction.org. Children must have a registration form filled out by their parents which can be done in advance or the morning of the race.
The Karner Blue 5K-10K-Half Marathon registration deadline is Wednesday, July 17. All events will continue, rain or shine. For more information on the Karner Blue 5K-10K-Half Marathon and the Kids Race, please visit www.blackrivercountry.net and click on the events tab.
