(8/7/13) The 9th Annual Karner Blue 5K-10K-Half Marathon tallied 144 registered runners for this year's event.
Aside from those who registered for these events, 20 children ran the Kids Race. The weather was perfect, spirits were high and the runners were cheered on by a large crowd of family and friends.
Medallions were presented for the first, second and third place finishes for two categories in the Kids Race. In the one to five-year-old category the winners were, first place – Winona Schneider, second place – Harrison Hass and third place – Stella Zank. In the six to eight-year-old category the winners were, first place – Hunter Lechner, second place – Max Pederson and third place – Madeline Pederson. All Kids Race participants received participation buttons and Jackson In Action goodie bags.
Medal presentations were also given for youth twelve and under. The winners of this age group for the 5K girls were first place – Hope Roskos, 31:02 and second place – Ella Brown, 31:51. The winners of the boys 12-and-under were first place - Tanner Brown, 25:36; second place – Caden Skelding, 31:01 and third place Shane Wallace, 37:40.
Others were presented with medallions for each race for the first, second and third place finishes for both men and women in each category. The overall winners of the men's 5K event were first place – Tonie Johnson, 18:31; second place –Zachary Markhardt, 18:56; and third place –Matt Torgerson, 19:50. The overall winners of the women's 5K event were first place – Kayla Laufenberg, 22:30; second place – Trisha Wagner, 22:43; and third place – Amy Stoker, 23:08.
The overall winners of the men's 10K event were first place – Brandon Skelding, 39:08; second place – Erik Ledvina, 43:07; and third place – Scott McCarty, 45:18. The overall winners of the women's 10K event were first place – Karen Weiler, 45:50; second place – Amy Becker, 46:58; and third place – Kristin Weiler, 47:03.
The overall winners of the men's Half Marathon were first place – Tom Furo, 1:30.19; second place – Paul Harris, 1:30.43; and third place – Ben Oehlschlaeger, 1:36.00. The overall winners of the women's Half Marathon were first place – Mandy Kleba-Buiser, 1:51.59; second place – Melissa Haas, 1:57.42; and third place – Erin Hagen-Paulson, 1:58.06.
With tough competition from seven corporate teams, American Family Insurance took home the 5K Corporate Team traveling trophy. Team runners were Brandon Skelding, Trisha Wagner, Brian Lakowske, Jessica Lakowske, Brady Palmer and Jackson Burgau. American Family owner and team sponsor Shawn Johnson stated, "I am so proud of my team. They have worked hard to win this competition and they are very deserving of this trophy." The second place corporate team was Faith Lutheran Church and the team coming in third was Atlas Resin Proppants. Other corporate teams included two teams from the Black River Falls EMS, Scholze Ace Home Center and Black River Memorial Hospital. Each year sponsorship opportunities exist in conjunction with the Karner Blue Race. Chamber businesses have the opportunity to sponsor T-shirt's, mile markers, supply water or Gatorade and operate a water/food station. Joe Williams, Race committee chair, was pleased with the results of the ninth annual race and commented, "The weather was absolutely perfect for this year's event." "The tourism benefit for the Black River area is huge and on behalf of the entire race committee, I want to extend my thanks to everyone who helped make this another successful event." Williams also commented, "The Chamber enjoys partnering with the organizers of the Karner Blue Butterfly Festival combining the race with the other activities planned throughout the day."
