Autopsy: Helgeson Died of Multiple Gun-shot Wounds

(9/28/13) The Hixton man found buried on his property this last week died of multiple gun-shot wounds, according preliminary autopsy reports released Friday by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

Sergeant Patrick LaBarbara says the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office identified 57 year-old Brian Helgeson through known body markings, dental records, and family confirmation.  According to court documents the suspect, 20 year-old Lars Helgeson, has admitted to shooting his father and burying the body nearly two weeks ago.  Lars admitted he used a .22-caliber pistol, shooting Brian in the hand, back, and head.  Then, used a tractor to drag the body to a gravel section of the driveway, covered it with a blanket, doused it gasoline, and burned it.  Court documents also indicate, Lars then took the body to an ATV track on the property and buried it in one of the jumps on the course.  Sergeant LaBarbara says Lars Helgelson remains in the Jackson County jail without bond.  A probable cause affidavit has been filed with the Jackson County Circuit Court to hold Lars in jail until charges are brought by the District Attorney's Office. It's unknown on when those charges will be filed. The case remains under investigation.
