(11/13/13) On November 13, 2013 @ 06:59AM the Black River Falls Fire Department (BRFFD) was paged by the Jackson County Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) for a chimney fire at W8995 Oak Ridge Road which is located in the Township of Manchester and County of Jackson.
Upon arrival Black River Falls Fire Chief (BRFFC) found two story, wood frame, and single family home with heavy smoke coming from the eves and roof ridge. The fire appeared to be mainly in the attic space at this time with no visible flames on the outside of the structure.
BRFFC advised the EDC that he had a working structure fire at this address and requested mutual aid for tenders and firefighters from the Town of Lincoln (Warrens), Hatfield and Merrillan Fire Departments.
A party at the scene who advised he was the owner stated that he was the only person in the structure at the time. He did report a cat was still in the structure. The department was able to locate the cat alive in the structure and it appears the cat will be okay.
An offensive (interior) attack was first made on the fire which later went into a defensive (exterior) attack when the fire engulfed the attic area.
The owner who was home at the time of the fire reports he came home from work at 02:00AM and started a fire in the wood stove. He further reported that he went to bed at about 04:00AM and awoke to smoke in the home just before the department was paged. Smoke alarms were in place but the owner does not recall hearing them. The owner also reported that he had seen fire in the living room area around the chimney as he evacuated the home.
The structure and contents are insured. A damage estimate is not known at this time but both contents and the structure appear to be a total loss.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the owner.
The property owner – occupant is a Ladon Schultz.
There were no reported injuries to any civilians or firefighters.
BRFFD was on scene for 5 hours. Mutual aid was received from the Merrillan, Town of Lincoln (Warrens) and Hatfield Fire Departments for water tenders.
