Individuals and Businesses Target of Scam

(12/16/13) It's not just individuals who are being targeted by Wisconsin's latest utility scam.

Businesses are getting those calls, too -- and they're complaining to state officials about it.  We first learned about this one a few weeks ago, when people started being threatened with a loss of their utility services.  The state's consumer protection agency said today that Wisconsin businesses are getting the same calls.  They're being told that their electricity or phone service will be shut off until they send payments within hours by wire transfers or prepaid debit cards -- something that cannot be traced to the scammers.  Companies are being told that they face cut-offs either for not paying their electric bills, or not paying for meter improvements or repairs.  Officials say the real utilities will never call to threaten cancellations -- and they'll never ask for wire or prepaid debit card payments.
