(5/12/12) Fern Elda Haldeman Somerville left this life on May 10, 2012, to be with her husband, Jokie, and family in her new life. Her family was with her as she transitioned to her new life.

Fern was born on Feb. 5, 1928, to John and Cora (Brandau) Haldeman on the home farm in Norwalk, Wis. She moved to the North Bend/Melrose area from Norwalk with her family at the age of five and has lived here ever since.

Fern and John (Jokie) Somerville were married on June 21, 1947. They worked side by side on the home farm and raised five children. After they quit farming she went to work for Northern Engraving, first in Galesville and then in West Salem. During which time she made many lasting friendships. She retired from there at the young age of 81 after 35+ years of service.

Fern enjoyed having her family and friends around and meeting with ‘The Girls’ for lots of good conversation. She loved to reminisce and share stories of days gone by — good times and funny experiences had by all.

One of her favorite hobbies was making miles of crochet thread into beautiful doilies for her family and friends. They were all made with stitches of Love.

Fern will be sadly missed by many but never ever forgotten.

Fern is survived by her daughters, Veda (Terry) Ghent, Vicki (Ed) Malson and Valerie (Mike) Patterson; son, Bob (Peg) Somerville; daughter-in-law, Nancy Somerville; brother, Gale (Nancy) Haldeman; brother-in-law, Duane (Shirley) Somerville; sister-in-law, Evie Somerville; nine grandchildren, Terry Lee (Carrie) Ghent, Krissy (Bryan) Shippee, Lisa Somerville, Steven (Penne) Somerville, Laura (Randy) Christopherson, Megan and Sarah Malson, John and Jared Patterson; and 10 great-grandchildren, Devin and Adam Ghent, Olive and Elsa Shippee, Zachery and Mason Gullickson, Paige and Kylie Somerville, Erik and Katie Christopherson; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

She was preceded in death by Jokie, her husband of 50 years; her son, Thomas; her parents, Dohn and Cora (Brandau) Haldeman; three brothers, Byron, Kenneth and Boyd Haldeman.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 10, 2012, at the Zwickey Funeral Home in Melrose. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15 at Zwickey Funeral Homes Melrose Chapel. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, North Bend, Wis.
