Alton O. "Al" Bernhardt

  (1-25-13)  Alton O. "Al" Bernhardt, age 85, of Black River Falls, WI., died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 in the Grand View Care Center in Blair, WI. 

   Al was born on Nov. 25, 1927 to Oscar and Wilhelmina (Fischer) Bernhardt in the Township of Gibson, Manitowoc County.  He was raised on the family farm near Mishicot, and attended grade school at Jambo Creek.  He graduated from Mishicot High School in 1945 and received his teaching certificate from Univ. of WI.-Oshkosh. He married Gertrude Wrasse on October 20, 1950 in Oshkosh, WI. Before his teaching career, he worked at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc for two years. He taught rural school for two years at Brazeau Central, and he was an eighth grade teacher and principal for one year at Lena, WI. Al and Gert moved to Jackson County in 1954.  Al was the supervising teacher until the merger of the rural schools.  He then taught sixth grade in Black River Falls until becoming principal at the Forrest St. Elementary School.  He retired in 1987.  Following retirement, he worked as a greeter at Walmart. He served on the church council and as a Sunday School Teacher at Evangelical Lutheran Church.  He was a past member and secretary of the Lions Club. Al and Gert are members of Little Norway Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Gertrude, one son Edward (Irene) Bernhardt, Black River Falls, two daughters, Constance (Steve Granoff) Bernhardt, Pepperill, MS., and Karen Bernhardt, Blair, WI., one brother, Ralph (Grace) Bernhardt, and one sister, Lucille Monfils, both of Manitowoc, WI. three grandchildren, Jason Zehe, Wilhelmina Granoff, and Dante Edwardson, three great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Jason Jr. and Parker Zehe. He was preceded in death by  his parents, an infant brother, and a brother, Harland.  Funeral services for Alton O. "Al" Bernhardt will be at 11 A.M. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from the Little Norway Lutheran Church, Hwy 54 W. of Black River Falls.  Pastor Calvin Thoreson will conduct services and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Black River Falls.  Relatives and friends may call at Torgerson's Funeral Home (715-284-4321) 408 N. Water St. on Monday, Jan. 28 from 4 until 6 P.M. and on Tuesday at the church from 10 A.M. until the time of services.
