(6-12-13) Omer G. Gunem, age 92, of Eau Claire and formerly of Osseo, passed away Monday afternoon, June 10, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System - Eau Claire.

Omer was born March 22, 1921, in Whitehall to Gilbert H. and Elvina (Eide) Gunem, then of Strum. When Omer was one year old, the family moved from Strum to Osseo, where Omer would spend his formative years, graduating from Lincoln Hill High School (now Osseo-Fairchild High School) in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on February 11, 1941, and served 4 years and 8 months, with 26 of those months in North Africa. After his service, he worked with his father for 11 years at Gunem Chevrolet in Osseo. On October 11, 1953, he married Janice Wahl at Second Congregational Church, Eau Claire. Omer and Janice resided in Osseo until 2005, when they moved to Eau Claire. He worked at the Bank of Osseo for 28 years, retiring as president, and serving as a bank director for 30 years. He was a member of the Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school in his earlier years. An avid golfer, Omer was a member of the Osseo Golf Club for 71 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, Carl Nelson Post #324, and the Osseo Commercial Club. Omer is survived by his wife, Janice; son, Scott (Lalaine); grandson, Andrew, all of Eau Claire; sisters Hope (Bruce) Fiedler, Plymouth, WI, Elenore Gunem, La Crosse, Inez Abraham, Houston, MN; brother, Lyman, Eau Claire; brother-in-law Fred Holland, Herndon, VA; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and their families. Omer was preceded in death by his parents; sister Beatrice Holland; sisters-in-law Eileen (Howard) Elliott and Helen (Robert) Kenney; and brothers-in-law Arlow Abraham, Dr. George E. (Kathryn) Wahl, and James T. (Tone) Wahl. Funeral services for Omer will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Lewis Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Osseo Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church, P0. Box 337, Osseo, WI 54758. Schiefelbein Funeral Home in Osseo is assisting the family.
