Peter D. Proft

(8/2/130 Peter D Proft, 56, of Melrose passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, his family at his side.

Pete was born on May 22, 1957, in Tomahawk, Wis. to Jerry and Dolores (Mitchell) Proft. He graduated from Melrose-Mindoro High School in 1976.

He was a carpenter by trade and worked that industry his entire life being a member of Carpenters Union 1143 until his illness forced him to retire. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and grandchildren, flipping houses, woodworking and camping. Sports, his passion being baseball, were also a big part of his life.

He married the love of his life, Kristine Gerdes, on Aug. 4, 1990. After living at various places in the area, they settled in Melrose in 1999 in one of the houses that Pete had built. They spent any available time together after his diagnosis and took several extended trips when his health permitted.

Survivors include his wife, Kris; his children, Ashlea (Tim) Willms, Paxton Proft and Wyatt Proft. His grandchildren, Isaiah, Kenzie and Kallen Willms. His mother, Dolores Proft-Anderson; brothers, Mike (Paula) Proft and John Proft and sister, Debbie (Tim) Kreibich. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Preceding him in death were his father, jerry, step-father, David Anderson, his grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Melrose Methodist Church with burial in the Melrose Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, at Zwickey Funeral Home in Melrose and at the church on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are preferred.
