(10-10-13) Mildred K.Olson, 90, of Black River Falls died peacefully Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Black River Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Mildred was born on June 1, 1923, in Ettrick Wisconsin, to Gustav and Gertrude (Ekern) Byom. A 1941 graduate of Galesville High School, she then attended Buffalo County Normal School. She taught at Grant School in Trempealeau County for two years. From 1945 to 1946, she attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. She was employed at the Speltz Studio from 1966-1980.
On July 6, 1946, Mildred married Andy Casper Earl Olson at Hardies Creek Lutheran Church. In 1949 they purchased a farm in Spring Creek area of Jackson County.
Mildred's entire life reflected her fervent faith. She was very active in church activities at both Hardies Creek and Squaw Creek Lutheran Churches. She was a teacher and superintendent of both Sunday school and Vacation Bible School and a member of the choir. She held various offices in the local Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, was a leader for adult Bible study, an Interfaith Caregiver and Christian Women's Club member and officer.
Mildred always sent cards to family and friends on special occasions. She was an avid reader, loved to write letters, share photos, play Scrabble and Upwards and tell family stories. She received the Jackson County Women in History Award.
She is survived by three children, Kenneth Ph.D. (Barbara Edlund) Olson of Schaumburg, IL, Anita (Robert) Damon of Appleton, WI and Calvin (Ione Sletteland) Olson of Black River Falls; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) Scholl, Stephanie Olson; Julie Damon, Sara (Josh) Huhmann, Lori (Dan) Wendlandt, Scott (Leah) Olson, Kimberly (Mike) Wood, 7 great-grandchildren, Blake and Bennett Scholl, Micah Huhmann,
Adeline Wendlandt, Ella Grace and Dylan Olson, Paige Wood, and twin Huhmann boys due to be born in December; two sister-in-laws, Blanche Olson, Judy (Dahl) Byom; and many loving nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Andy, two brothers, Gerald and Alvin Byom and a great grandson Bryce Wood.
Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Torgerson Funeral Home, Black River Falls and at Squaw Creek Lutheran Church, Co. Hwy.P, Black River Falls on Monday from noon until the time of service. The funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Paul Tobiason at 1 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2013, at Squaw Creek Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
