Here are the
stories:
Mistakes they usually
don't make doomed the Wisconsin Badgers in their in-state rivalry game in
Milwaukee against Marquette. Following the lead of Junior Cadougan, the Golden
Eagles beat UW, 60-50, Saturday. The Badgers made 14 turnovers, about half
again the average. They also shot 33 percent from the field and 39 percent from
the free throw line. Marquette scored the first seven points of the game and
never trailed, but the Badgers were able to pull close twice in the second half.
In each case, Cadougan stepped up and helped his team maintain its lead. The
senior point guard hit 7-of-10 shots, took down four rebounds and dished out a
half-dozen assists, with only one turnover. The Badger offense was so anemic,
nobody scored in double figures. Jared Berggren and Ryan Evans each scored nine
points. Marquette's record improves to 6-2, while Wisconsin falls to
6-4.

The last time the Detroit
Lions won a game at Lambeau Field, Barry Sanders was keeping defensive players
awake at night. The Lions will try to avoid losing on the Packers' home turf
for a 21st consecutive time tonight. Green Bay is trying to retain its hold on
first place in the NFC Central Division by taking its ninth win in 13 games.
The Pack moved back into a tie for the top spot with last week's 23-14 win over
the Vikings. The Packers are welcoming a familiar face with the signing of Ryan
Grant. Injuries have depleted the team's running backs and the Pack only have
three rushing touchdowns in the first dozen games. Grant had thousand-yard
seasons in 2008 and 2009. The Lions will be trying to reverse the negative
momentum. They've dropped four in a row and have a disappointing 4-8
record.

North Dakota jumped out to
a 2-0 lead, but couldn't hold it at LaBahn Arena. The Wisconsin women's hockey
team rallied for a 3-2 win. It was the first time all season the Badgers had
won after being outshot by an opponent. North Dakota scored just 40 seconds
into the game and went up 2-0 by the second period. Goals by Madison Packer and
Brianna Decker came just 30 seconds apart near the end of that period. Then,
Alev Kelter scored the winner a couple of minutes into the final period. Alex
Rigsby had 33 saves in the victory as Wisconsin's record improved to 11-6-2.
The Badgers go for the home sweep this afternoon at 1 p.m. in
Madison.

The Wisconsin men's hockey
team blew a 3-1 lead, but held on for a 3-3 tie at home against Michigan Tech
Saturday. Both games in the weekend series ended in a tie. Tyler Barnes opened
the scoring with a first period goal, but Tech answered quickly. Brendan Woods
made the lead 2-1 at 8:56 of the period. Joseph LaBate made the lead 3-1 early
in the second period. The game-tying goal came early in the final period.
Wisconsin controlled the action and outshot Michigan Tech 37-25. Joel Rumpel
made 22 saves. Wisconsin's record is 2-7-5, including 2-5-5 in WCHA
competition.

St. Thomas jumped out to a
21-0 lead in the first quarter, then held on to beat the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh and qualify for the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl next weekend. The
Tommies scored on the first play from scrimmage when defensive lineman Ayo Idowu
picked up a bad pitch and returned it 25 yards to the end zone. The Titans
turned the ball over four times in the loss. Quarterback Nate Wara accounted
for both Oshkosh scores with one passing TD and one rushing. Wara hit 20-of-34
passes for 266 yards. The Tommies take on Mount Union in the title game in
Salem, Virginia, next Friday.

You work extra, you get
paid extra. University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez will get an
extra 225 thousand dollars in his paycheck for one month on the job. Alvarez
will coach the Badgers in next month's Rose Bowl. He will get the money the
university would have paid head coach Bret Bielema before he left to coach
Arkansas. Alvarez makes a million dollars a year as Wisconsin's athletic
director. He'll be pretty busy all month long, searching for Bielema's
permanent replacement, getting ready for the bowl game and meeting with new
recruits during one of the busiest times of the athletic year – while still
performing athletic director duties. He says he served as coach and athletic
director for three years, getting just one salary. Those days are
history.
