Here are the
stories:
With starting quarterback
Christian Ponder sidelined and running back Adrian Peterson contained, the
Minnesota Vikings dropped their rematch with Green Bay in Saturday's NFC Wild
Card game 24-10. That game was the third meeting between the two teams in the
last six weeks. Ponder suffered an elbow injury in last Sunday's Vikings
victory. Peterson's performance wasn't bad at all – 99 yards on 22 carries –
but it was far-removed from the 409 yards he'd piled up in the first two
meetings. The Packers were never really challenged. Backup Minnesota
quarterback Joe Webb had a hard time finding his receivers and a razor-sharp
Aaron Rodgers connected with a record 10 different receivers while throwing for
274 yards. Fullback John Kuhn scored twice, with DuJuan Harris adding the third
TD. One of the bad moments for Minnesota came early in the third quarter when
the Packers lined up for a field goal. The Vikes had 12 men on the field, the
Packers were awarded a first down and they went on to score the touchdown that
basically put the game out of reach. The Packers advance to play the NFC West
Division Champion San Francisco 49ers next Saturday at 7 p.m. with the
win.

Scoring the
first six points after half time, the Milwaukee Bucks claimed a brief 53-52
lead. That was about all the Bucks had to feel good about in a 95-80 loss to
Indiana. Milwaukee was dominated on the boards by the Pacers while dropping its
fourth straight game. Roy Hibbert did the damage for Indiana, scoring 20 points
and taking 11 of his 15 rebounds from the offensive boards. Monta Ellis scored
21 points to lead the Bucks. John grabbed 13 rebounds and Larry Sanders had
another double-double, with a dozen points and a dozen rebounds.

Joel Rumpel recorded his
second shutout of the season and the Wisconsin men's hockey team ran its
unbeaten string to eight in a row, taking a 1-0 WCHA victory on the road at
Alaska-Anchorage. Derek Lee scored the games only goal at 2:56 of the second
period. The win gives Wisconsin a weekend sweep of the two-game series against
the Seawolves and moves the Badgers into a tie for seventh place. Wisconsin's
record is 6-7-5, including 4-5-5 in conference games. Eight games is the longer
unbeaten string for the Badgers in seven seasons. Wisconsin outshot Alaska in
the defensive game, 22-12. The Badgers are on the road again next weekend,
traveling to Mankato, Minnesota, for a series against the Minnesota State
Mavericks, winners of 11 of their last 12 games.

Davante Gardner hit his
free throws and Georgetown missed. That was the deciding factor in Marquette's
49-48 upset of the 15th-ranked Hoyas Saturday afternoon. Gardner hit his pair
with 8.3 seconds left for a 49-46 lead, then Georgetown's Trent Lockett was
fouled on a three-point attempt. He hit the first two free throws, but was
short on the third after Golden Eagle coach Buzz Williams froze him with a
timeout. Lockett managed to grab his own rebound and was fouled again, but he
missed two more free throws to seal the Eagles' fourth win in a row.
Marquette's record improves to 11-3, including 2-0 in the Big East Conference.
Georgetown is 10-2 and the loss was its conference opener. Defenses were in
charge for both the Eagles and Hoyas. They started the game missing 21 of their
first 25 shots and Marquette led at half, 20-19, despite hitting only 7-of-27
from the field. Gardner finished with a dozen points for the
Eagles.

Detroit hit more than 90
percent from the free throw line on the way to an 84-76 win over the University
of Wisconsin-Green Bay Saturday. Ray McCallum and Jason Calliste combined to
hit 25-of-27 charity shots for the winners. The Phoenix cut the lead to three
points with three minutes left, but could never catch the home team. Keifer
Sykes scored 21 points to lead Green Bay scoring.

A significant edge at the
free throw line wasn't enough to boost the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
past Wright State last night. The Raiders trailed by five at half, 28-23, but
came back to claim the 53-51 win. There was actually no scoring in the last 70
seconds as the Panthers' Jordan Aaron missed a shot with one second on the
clock. Aaron finished with 12 points. Milwaukee canned 18-of-25 free throws,
while Wright State had just 5-of-8. Milwaukee's record falls to 4-12 with its
second straight Horizon League defeat.

The PGA is having a hard
time getting its season going. The Hyundai Tournament of Champions was
postponed for a second straight day Saturday in Hawaii. The rain moved out, but
wind gusts of more than 40 miles per hour made play impossible. Weather
permitting, golfers will try to get in 36 holes today and will try to complete
54 holes by tomorrow night. Wisconsin competitors Steve Stricker and Mark
Wilson are in the field.
