Here are the
stories:
Two three-pointers by Ben
Brust, one to end regulation and the other in overtime, powered the Wisconsin
Badgers to a 65-62 upset of number-one ranked Michigan Saturday. The shot which
forced overtime had the crowd in Madison buzzing. The Badgers trailed by three
and had less than three seconds on the clock when Brust took a pass at
mid-court, dribbled once and fired up a prayer to tie the score and keep the Big
Ten Conference game going. Michigan becomes the third top-three team to lose
this week and this should be the sixth straight week with a different team on
top the AP Top-25 rankings. Brust scored 14 points to lead the Badgers,
including four from outside the arc. Wisconsin's record is now 17-7, including
8-3 in the Big Ten. Jared Berggren added 13 points and took down eight
rebounds. The Badgers had four players in double figures. For both teams it
was the second straight game which went an extra period.
-2/10-
Marquette retains its hold
on the top spot in the Big East Conference standings with an 89-78 win over
DePaul. Vander Blue led the way with 18 points, while Junior Cadougan added 17.
The game extended a couple of streaks – 22 consecutive home victories for
Marquette and eight straight losses for the Blue Demons. It won't be easy for
the Golden Eagles to stay on top. They still have conference games remaining
with Syracuse, Notre Dame and Georgetown. Offensive rebounding was a big weapon
for the Eagles. They only missed 24 shots and got the rebound on half of them.
Marquette's record is now 17-5, including 8-2 in conference play.

Former Milwaukee Buck
Charlie Villanueva nailed a three-pointer with less than 10 seconds to go, then
Rodney Stuckey ensured a Detroit win with a pair of free throws. The Pistons
edged the Bucks 105-100 last night. Brandon Jennings scored 26 to lead
Milwaukee and it was his tough fadeaway shot with just under 48 seconds left
which gave Milwaukee a 100-98 lead. Detroit scored the last seven. Playing
without Larry Sanders, two Milwaukee frontcourt performers came up with
double-doubles. Ersan Ilyasove scored 15 points and took down 10 rebounds,
while Samuel Dalembert scored 14 with a dozen rebounds. Neither side managed to
post a lead of more than three points in that hard-fought final period.
-2/10-
Wisconsin kept the winless
streak going for Bemidji State, edging the visitors at the Kohl Center last
night, 3-2. Bemidji State is winless in its last dozen games. Kevin Schulze
scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period. Keegan Meuer and
Brendan Woods gave Wisconsin a fast start with first-period goals. After Meuer
and Woods put Bucky on the board, Bemidji cut it to 2-1. A late goal made the
final score a little closer. Wisconsin's record is now 12-9-7, including 9-6-7
in the WCHA. Wisconsin goalie Landon Peterson made 18 saves, but a stout Badger
defensive effort meant he only had to face seven shots in the final period.
-2/10-
St. Cloud enjoyed an early
one-goal lead, but the rest of the contest belonged to the Wisconsin women's
hockey team Saturday afternoon. Five Badgers scored a goal in the 5-1 victory.
Three of those goals came on power plays. Just 10 seconds into the first power
play, Karley Sylvester found the back of the net for the Badgers. Rachel Jones
scored her first collegiate goal early in the second period and that one was
actually the game-winner. Jordan Brickner, Brianna Decker and Madison Packer
also scored. Wisconsin went 3-for-6 on power plays, while killing off two
penalties on defense. The win was number-200 for Wisconsin coach Mark Johnson.
The Badgers record improves to 17-9-2, including 13-9-2 in the
WCHA.
-2/10-
The University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee trailed from start to finish while losing its seventh
straight game, 64-49. Wright State started the Horizon League contest with a
13-4 run and was never seriously challenged. Paris Gulley's 10-point effort led
the Panthers. They shot 40 percent from the floor and committed 16 turnovers.
Milwaukee's record falls to 5-20, including 1-10 in Horizon League
play.
-2/10-
Conference scoring leader
Ray McCallum got 30 points for Detroit, but he didn't get much help in a 68-59
loss at Green Bay. The rest of the Titans hit just 10-of-35 shots. Keifer
Sykes led the Phoenix with 16 points and five rebounds. Jordan Fouse added a
dozen to go with seven rebounds and Kam Cerroni came off the bench to score 11.
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has a 13-12 record, including 7-5 in the
Horizon League.
-2/10-
Milwaukee Brewers manager
Ron Roenicke defended slugger Ryan Braun while giving a talk at Florida's
International's annual baseball banquet last night. Braun's name has been
linked to baseball's latest drug investigation and his manager says there's no
good reason for. Braun's name appears in records from a closed clinic in Coral
Gables which allegedly provided performance-enhancing substances to several
players. Braun says he used the person running the Biogenesis Clinic of
America, Anthony Bosch, only as a consultant in his defense last year when he
successfully fought what could have been a 50-game suspension for testing
positive for elevated levels of testosterone. The suspension was overturned in
arbitration.
