Here are the
stories:
Jamil Wilson scored 17 of
his career-high 19 points in the second half of Marquette's 72-64 victory over
Notre Dame yesterday. He got 16-point help from Chris Otule in the Golden
Eagles' 25th straight win on the home court, the second-longest active streak in
the nation. Otule was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. The Fighting Irish
were playing without their top scorer. The win improves Marquette's record to
21-7 overall, 12-4 in the Big East Conference. Marquette shot nearly 60 percent
from the floor, while holding Notre Dame to 38-percent shooting. The Eagles led
by 14 at half and stayed on top the rest of the way, despite going without a
field goal for a five-minute stretch in the second half. Notre Dame never got
closer than eight points. The 117th meeting between the two private school
could possibly be the last regular season conference meeting ever. Both are
exploring different scenarios for the 2013-2014 academic year.
-3/03-
Wisconsin basketball teams
have developed a reputation for their focus under Coach Bo Ryan, but today's
home game against Purdue has the look of a "trap" for a team with post-season
ambitions like the Badgers. Purdue carries a subpar 13-15 record, including 6-9
in Big Ten Conference play into the noon tip-off at the Kohl Center. They will
be facing a Badger team which went 7-4 during one stretch where they played nine
top-25 teams. Wisconsin's schedule strength is the third-toughest in the
country. The Badgers bring a 20-8 record into the contest, including 11-4 in
the Big Ten.
-3/03-
Losing a 75-56 decision to
Valparaiso costs the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay a first-round bye in the
upcoming Horizon League post-season tournament. The Phoenix are now a
number-four seed. Matt Kenney did the damage for the Crusaders by hitting
6-of-6 three-point shots and scoring 21 points. Alec Brown led Green Bay with
15 points and Keifer Sykes had 14. The game wasn't close. Valparaiso led by as
much as 24 points near the end of the game. Green Bay's record falls to 16-14
overall, 10-6 in conference competition.
-3/03-
A dunk by Toronto's Alan
Anderson with less than two seconds to go forced overtime, but the Milwaukee
Bucks dominated the extra frame while whipping the Raptors 122-114 Saturday. It
was the third straight win for Milwaukee. Ersan Ilyasova scored 29 points and
took down 11 rebounds for the Bucks. Brandon Jennings handed out a career-best
19 assists while scoring 11. Monta Ellis scored 23. Larry Sanders dunked to
open the overtime session and the Bucks scored the first seven points. Sanders
finished with 13 points, a dozen rebounds and five blocked shots.
-3/03-
Despite a one over par
round Saturday, Wisconsin golfer Mark Wilson actually moved up the leaderboard
five slots. The Pewaukee native is tied for 26th at one shot under par entering
today's fourth and final round at the Honda Classic in Florida. He trails
co-leaders Luke Guthrie and Michael Thompson by seven strokes. Madison's Jerry
Kelly didn't make the cut.
-3/03-
Kyle Busch overcame a pit
road speeding penalty and a bunch of cautions to win the Dollar General 200
Nationwide Series race in Phoenix yesterday. The penalty knocked him back into
22nd place, but the pole-sitter had a hot car and he still claimed the victory.
Matt Kenseth finished eighth as the only Wisconsin driver in the
field.
-3/03-
Mark Zengerle had a goal
and three assists in the Wisconsin men's hockey team's 6-1 rout of
Nebraska-Omaha Saturday on the road. That victory gave the Badgers a sweep of
the weekend series. After a bad start to the season, Wisconsin's overall record
now is a respectable 16-11-7, including 12-7-7 in the WCHA conference play.
Zengerle had a goal in each of the weekend games. The Badgers are in fourth
place in the conference standings, four points behind leader St. Cloud State
with two games left in the regular season. Michael Mersch had two goals and two
assists in Saturday's win, while Tyler Barnes added a goal and a pair of
assists. Joel Rumpel made 27 saves in goal to claim the victory which allowed
Wisconsin to leap over UNO in the standings.
-3/03-
The Wisconsin women's
hockey team scored three times in the final period to break a 1-1 tie and sweep
the best-of-three playoff series against St. Cloud State. The 4-1 victory means
the Badgers take on North Dakota next Friday in the Final Faceoff in
Minneapolis. Katy Josephs scored Wisconsin first two goals, then Madison Packer
and Brianna Decker wrapped up the scoring. Goalie Alex Rigsby made 22 saves,
including six when her team was a player short on penalty kills. All four of
the first-round playoff series in the WCHA ended in sweeps. The Badgers game
with North Dakota will start at 4 p.m. March 8th, then number-one seeded
Minnesota takes on Ohio State at 7 p.m. Wisconsin is seeded second on the basis
of a 23-9-2 season record.
-3/03-
Aramis Ramirez pounded a
double for his first hit of the spring, but left the field with a strained knee
Saturday. Milwaukee added to its injury list while edging the Los Angeles
Angels 4-3. With Matt Gamel out for the season and Corey Hart sidelined until
May, Ramirez was one of three Brewers who came up lame yesterday. He will be
checked out today. Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo missed his scheduled start
today with tightness in his groin and Ryan Braun has been idled by a bruised
knee. Hiram Burgos looked good yesterday, holding the Angels to one run on two
hits in four innings of work. Burgos fanned two batters and walked one. Rickie
Weeks had a home run in the victory.
